Arizona Humane Society – Nina Mason Pulliam Campus for Compassions

A History of Compassion

Since 1957, the Arizona Humane Society has fostered the belief that every pet deserves a good life. What once began as a small shelter established by a compassionate group of volunteers has since grown to become the state’s largest animal welfare and protection agency, as well as the state’s designated responder for animals in distress during natural disasters.

Over the years, we’d started various programs to save the lives of Arizona’s most vulnerable pets. But in 2013, we knew we had to push harder to create the pet-friendly future we wanted to see. In the face of a pet overpopulation crisis, we began lifesaving programs like our Parvo ICU, Maternity Suites, and Bottle Baby ICU & Kitten Nursery to care for animals who are often euthanized in other shelters.

As a result, we’ve decreased euthanization by 83%—that’s 130,000 additional lives saved. We’re working hard to transform the very notion of animal welfare in Arizona, and we’re proud to say that many of these first-of-their-kind programs, services, education and communication techniques that have been emulated by organizations all over the world.

Adopters participating in the Pets for Vets program will be responsible for paying the $15 license fee for adopted dogs (no fee for cats). Veterans wishing to participate in the program are asked to provide verification of veteran, reservist or active-duty status. The following documentation is accepted: Military ID, DD214 Military Discharge Certificate, Honorable Discharge Certificate, Letter from the U.S. Military Center in St. Louis or Letter from the Maryland Veterans Administration Service Program. The Staff at Animal Care and Control hope that every adoption is successful. That is why we follow the procedures we do. We take it very seriously and ask for your patience while we go through the process together. Arizona Animal Welfare League

Our Vision:

A no-kill Arizona that provides compassionate care for animals and the people who love them.

The Arizona Animal Welfare League is the largest and oldest no-kill shelter in Arizona. A “no-kill” shelter is an animal shelter that does not kill healthy or treatable animals even when the shelter is full, reserving euthanasia for terminally ill animals or those considered dangerous to public safety.

AAWL is a registered 501c3 non-profit organization, tax ID 23-7149453. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowable by law.

AAWL rescues, rehabilitates, and re-homes more than 4,000 dogs and cats that are abandoned or that have been surrendered by their owners. We do this primarily by rescuing them from other shelters in Maricopa County where they are likely to be euthanized due to the lack of time and resources to care for them. At any one time, our shelter will hold 140 cats and 190 dogs. We also have a foster parent network of approximately 90 families who provide care and shelter in their homes for puppies and kittens that are too young to be adopted, and those animals that are recovering from medical procedures or that need socialization before adoption.

All pets offered for adoption have been spayed or neutered; micro-chipped and are current on all vaccinations. Any medical treatments needed, including surgeries, are provided by our medical team and all animals are evaluated by our behavior department. Learn more about our Phoenix veterinary services and animal clinic.

AAWL not only adopts companion animals into loving homes, but we also hold a leadership position in the community in education and animal welfare issues. Check out our extensive dog and obedience training classes.
