Oakwood Creative Care Day Clubs

Nonprofit Adult Day Clubs & Dementia Support

Discover the Difference
Community Can Make!

"Innovative Support for Members & Their Families

At Oakwood Creative Care, you’ll find a supportive community providing so much more than just “adult day centers” or “day care for seniors”.

In our day clubs located throughout east valley Arizona, you’ll discover experts who are passionate about helping those with dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or stroke. Through enjoyable engagement activities and exploration, our members find new talents and hobbies every day.

Our Dementia Hub cultivates a community of care partners through various family support services. We offer Memory Cafés, support groups, and dementia coaching sessions with our experts who are passionate to ease the burden on care partners, so their loved one can remain living at home.

In short, we believe in “treatment beyond a pill” and will support your loved one to retain their sense of independence and ensure they feel respected and dignified."

Audience/Eligibility

A care model that sparks JOY for older adults

"The care model for seniors in our clubs offers a new paradigm of thinking for home and community-based services. We’re committed to creating a fun, supportive, and engaging space which inspires moments of JOY. Our senior care model honors personhood, aim to enhance self-esteem, decrease anxiety and depression, and ignite purpose.

When visiting OCC clubs, you won’t find “locked facilities”. We believe that when people are locked up and restrained, it increases agitation and aggression. Further, you won’t find our instructors and team members wearing scrubs. Members won’t be playing bingo, or sitting around watching tv — and stuffed babies or coloring sheets will be nowhere in sight!

A big part of what makes our clubs so unique is the innovative engagement “curriculum” we’ve created. This curriculum includes classes and programs designed to reflect your loved one’s strengths and interests, while encouraging independence and self-esteem; improving communication and creativity; reducing anxiety/depression; improving quality of life; and fostering lifelong learning.

Thanks to the resources we provide, you and others within your family will find many benefits, as well. You’ll be able to remain at work, reduce risk of hospitalization and falls, increase your own quality of life, and decrease family stress and caregiver burnout."

Salvation Army - Corps Community Center

The Salvation Army provides a wide range of elderly care and support options.

The Salvation Army passionately invites senior citizens into relationships with others through our many senior centers and eldercare programs. To help combat the loneliness, depression, and loss of independence that often accompany old age, we provide group dining experiences, coordinate activities, visit the homebound, and offer residential assistance for older adults in need of a senior living community.

Activities:

The Salvation Army works to stimulate the minds and bodies of older adults via educational opportunities, low-impact exercise, dances, lunches, fellowship, and countless other "young at heart" activities.

Residences:

To help ease the functional transitions associated with advanced age, we offer housing assistance and living quarters for the elderly - each cultivated with a loving atmosphere of help, kindness, and acceptance.

Adult Day Care Centers:

Because the mental and physical disabilities associated with old age impact both the elderly and their loved ones, The Salvation Army offers adult day care facilities. Here, older adults unable to independently care for themselves enjoy friendship, kindness, and monitored activities while their caretakers enjoy a much-needed break.

InMaricopa: New Maricopa-Sky Harbor shuttle takes headache out of summer holiday

NOTE: This article was written by Monica Spencer, InMaricopa reporter and published on July 1st, 2024, in InMaricopa.

When preparing for a summer getaway to escape the heat, it’s only natural to focus on airfare, hotels and attractions — not getting to and from the airport. But if you live in Maricopa, that’s a piece of your holiday puzzle that requires some serious planning.

It can be a headache.

That’s precisely why husband-wife duo Kevin and Lori Riley are kickstarting Maricopa’s only airport shuttle service, Ride347, this summer.

“We want to make sure you don’t have to think about how you’re going to get to the airport,” Kevin said.

Ride347 will make its maiden voyage to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Independence Day. Kevin has noticed it’s a much-needed service.

“This town has been needing a dedicated bus route to the airport for the longest time and we’ve been waiting for someone else to do it,” he said. “No one has, so we took the initiative to go ahead and start it.”

Of course, Ride347 will also pick you up from the airport and take you home.

A needed service
Current options for an airport chauffeur are slim.

“There’s just not a good way of getting there unless you get a taxi, Uber or catch a ride from a family member,” Kevin said.

Rideshare bookings from Uber or Lyft can range from $35 to $150 depending on traffic — and when State Route 347 is the only path to the airport, you can never rule out a jam. A taxi would cost a rider at least $80, especially when considering the 30-plus-mile one-way trip.

For those who want to drive themselves, there’s the added struggle of fighting traffic and shelling out daily parking fees before even making it to the check-in kiosks.

To fill the gap, Ride347 will transport travelers along a fixed route for a flat $38 rate multiple times per day, with rides starting at 5 a.m.

Cozy riding
While the flat rate and dependable schedule are a welcome relief for riders, a relaxing ride is the icing on the cake. Or perhaps just an icy option on hot summer days, according to Kevin.

“It’s a very comfortable ride,” he said. “It has two A/C units, so it gets nice and cold in there. You could hang meat in there.”

The two buses hold 12 to 14 passengers in cushy seats, plus they have an ADA option for wheelchairs and scooters. Kevin said he plans to eventually add a TV and WiFi to the buses as amenities.

“We just want to be a reliable, dependent and safe route to the airport on a set schedule,” he said. “We’ll always be there seven days a week.”

Maricopa's Historical California Zephyr Silver Horizon observation car

"It has been years now since anyone has ridden into town on a rail aboard the Zephyr. Since being decommissioned more than 35 years ago, the Maricopa landmark has had a bit part in a major motion picture, been altered to serve as a train depot and ticket station, been an awkward, tattered attraction and more recently sat forlorn awaiting transformation on land donated to the city by John and Mary Lou Smith near Maricopa’s former swimming pool, next to the city’s new museum.

Now a septuagenarian, the Zephyr is about to get new life showing off Maricopa’s railroad history."

City Announces New Dog Parks

City of Maricopa Press Release:

August 1st, 2023

From the City of Maricopa Communications Department:

New Dog Park Set to Open at Copper Sky

Maricopa, Arizona - The City of Maricopa is excited to announce the opening of a new dog park in an effort to provide high-quality amenities in more convenient locations for our pet owners. This plan was first presented to the community in August of 2021 outlining an effort to create smaller dog parks throughout the community for ease of access and decreased travel requirements.

The Bark at Copper Sky is located on the north end of the park just east of the lake and includes new amenities for our city's four-legged community members.

The Bark features an agility and precision course, a dog ramp, elevated steps, and several jumps. There are two water fountains located inside the park. Additionally, there are numerous shaded areas throughout with additional shade features planned in the future.

The Canine Crossing at Pacana Park opened earlier this year behind softball field #2 and will soon house similar amenities.

The existing dog park on the southwest side of Copper Sky will close on August 27.

Pet owners can anticipate more options as the City plans to open a third dog park near city hall in the future.

Dwarf Car Museum

Home of the first Dwarf Race Car and the handmade Dwarf Car Cruiser, created by Ernie Adams.

Ernie Adams had a fascination with cars starting back in grade school. He would admire the cars of the time, drew them for school assignments and even built a wooden car as long as a crate box with steering and peanut butter jar lids for taillights. His mother would pull him throughout his hometown of Harvard, Nebraska.

The first Dwarf Car came to life in 1965 as a 28 Chevy two-door sedan made out of nine old refrigerators. Ernie began gathering the materials for this little car in 1962. By 1965 he had enough materials and an 18 hp Wisconsin motor to begin construction. With a homemade hacksaw made from a chair frame, hammer and a chisel, Ernie began construction. He had no idea what this would be the beginning of. Because this is the first Dwarf Car ever built, it is known as “GRANDPA DWARF.” This first Dwarf Car is kept in running order and is still driven today.

The first two Dwarf Race Cars were built in Dec. 1979 and early 1980. The Dwarf Race Car idea came about after Ernie Adams and Daren Schmaltz had attended motorcycle side hack races in Phoenix, Arizona. During the drive home, Ernie expressed concern that three-wheeled racers were to slow in the corners. He said they could improve considerably by adding a fourth wheel to help thru the corners. Ernie suggested that adding a car body would also help spectator appeal. The first Dwarf Car race took place at the Yavapai County Fair in Prescott, Arizona in September 1983. There were 12 cars registered.

After leaving the Dwarf Race Cars, Ernie had learned a lot about bending and shaping metal. He loved to see heads turn in admiration of the Dwarf Race Cars while being towed down the highway. Ernie knew it was time to change and put his metal shaping skills to the test. Now he wanted a fully dressed Dwarf Car with fenders, chrome, finished interior and most of all street legal and the Dwarf Car Cruiser was born.

What is Domestic Violence? (Copywritten by Hope Women's Center, 2023)

hope women's center

Domestic Violence is a pattern of behaviors used by one partner in an intimate relationship to maintain power and control over the other partner. Domestic violence is any physical, sexual, emotional, economic or psychological actions or threats that influence or manipulate the other partner in a relationship. Still not sure your situation is DV?

Ask yourself, does your partner . . .

  1. Threaten to harm or kill himself if you leave the relationship?
  2. Threaten harm to those you love or to pets?
  3. Accuse you of cheating, stalk you or monitor you, or act jealous or possessive of you?
  4. Pressure you sexually or withhold affection from you as punishment?
  5. Isolate you or abuse you emotionally or verbally?
  6. Control your access to money or withhold money from you?
  7. Cause you to feel afraid or worthless all or most of the time?
  8. Use and/or abuse substances? Hurt you physically?
  9. Has the physical violence increased in severity in the past year?
  10. Are there guns in the home, have you been threatened with a weapon, or has your partner ever tried to choke you?

Arf-anage Dog Rescue

Animals Are Our Mission

Here at Arf-Anage Dog Rescue, our motto is “No Mom Left Behind”. We specialize in moms and pups from local shelters as well as the Navajo reservation. When fosters are available, we also help with puppies that are owner-surrendered, “accidental” litters, or the last of a litter that someone just “couldn’t get rid of”.

Once our Mama dogs are done raising their pups, they are given time to recover then spayed, rehabbed, and made ready for forever families.

Puppies are vaccinated, spayed/neutered, and microchipped. We orient them into a foster-home environment and begin potty training and socialization. We find them great forever homes and in case it doesn’t work out, we take the dogs back and find them another loving home. We offer 80% refunds on adoption fees up to 5 days after the adoption.

In some situations, we also offer assistance to help find free or reasonable spay and neuter services for owned pets.

Community Alliance Against Family Abuse

As of July 1st, 2021, CAAFA is merging into A New Leaf.

As a long-standing leader in domestic violence services, A New Leaf is now operating Community Alliance Against Family Abuse’s existing programs. This partnership is a step in a new direction for both organizations and we’re excited to join forces to strengthen services for survivors in Pinal County and Eastern Maricopa County!

Community Alliance Against Family Abuse (CAAFA) provides trauma-informed, person- centered comprehensive services to victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence in Pinal and Eastern Maricopa Counties.

Founded in 1998, Community Alliance Against Family Abuse (CAAFA) is the first and only non-profit sexual and domestic abuse service provider in Northern Pinal County.

Our Community Outreach team provides advocacy and counseling services to survivors by traveling throughout the counties.

Within our Outreach team are our Legal Advocates who assist survivors in navigating the legal systems, and our THRIVE Specialist, who provides services to survivors through a transition-in-place program.

We have a Licensed Counselor on staff who provides therapy and counseling to survivors and facilitates support groups.

We also operate an emergency safe house 24/7, 365 days a year.

Our Emergency Shelter program provides survivors who are fleeing abuse and their children with a safe place to stay, during which time they can choose to receive healing and counseling services, legal advocacy services, psycho- education, and case management services to assist them with securing permanent housing and maintaining independence free from violence.

CAAFA has adopted an evidence-based, low-barrier model to promote autonomy and choice for survivors.

Our facilities are ADA accessible, and we make every effort to provide services to survivors that are culturally- sensitive.

All of our services are free and confidential.

Services:

Survivors can find help with the 16-bed emergency shelter, support groups, legal advocacy, case management, sexual assault victim advocacy, food boxes, community outreach services, and more.

I provide families who have loved ones living with dementia a proven path to better care, less frustration, and the support you need to live life as normally as possible.

I provide caregivers who are managing the aging process of someone they love a directed path through the process of assessing what's needed, where to begin and how to keep connected throughout the journey.

Caring for someone with dementia? Do you find yourself feeling as though you're losing your sanity because when you're in the presence of others, your loved one seems to effortlessly adapt and appear perfectly composed, even though things are far from normal at home? I get it; it can be incredibly maddening! Just to reassure you, you're NOT losing your mind. Interestingly, this is one of the most common and deeply frustrating experiences when you're caring for someone living with memory loss.

Huhugan Heritage Center

How many times have you driven past this museum on SR 347?

This modern cultural center highlights the ancestral, historic and current cultures of the Gila River Indian Community, made up of two tribes – the Akimel O’otham and the Pee Posh. Our mission is to ensure our Akimel O’otham and Pee Posh cultures flourish for future generations.

The Huhugam Heritage Center was built in 2003, fulfilling our Community vision to create a place for Community, culture, land, tradition and spirit: a place to honor and preserve our Him dak (our way of life).

Come experience our unique and calming architecture. The Center stairsteps up out of the desert, the building silhouettes designed to blend in with the nearby mountain ranges and hills.

In our state-of-the-art collections repository, we care for Huhugam, Akimel O’otham and Pee Posh treasures from our ancestral lands' boundaries of the Huhugam (also known by the archaeological name Hohokam), master artists, farmers and crafts people of our desert home.

Collections which include large archaeological project holdings including the Snaketown, Gila River Cultural Resources Management Program and Bureau of Reclamation Central Arizona Project Collections, an outstanding collection of nearly 500 O’odham baskets, an exquisite Pee Posh pottery collection, the trombone and memorabilia of renowned Akimel O’otham jazz trombonist Russell Moore and the Blackwater Store & Trading Post and Arts and Crafts museum collections.
